My dissertation, Glimpses of the World: The Vignette in 21st Century American Fiction, examines how contemporary novels employ the vignette to build a new realism that responds to the increasing predominance of virtual communication on platforms with short textual-visual messages and posts like Instagram, Twitter, Slack or Facebook. I argue that this new realism is able to embrace the contemporary need for connection to the material world, in face of alienating, disembodied online existence, while also acknowledging the ways in which 21st-century life is structured by virtual connections.
